STYLE//Great Gamine Read: Vogue Latin America
Last week I was head over heels for bright colors and patterns but this week I’m all about the neutrals. Isn’t it amazing how our personal style can do a 180 in such a short amount of time?
I came across this spread featuring Anja Rubik for Vogue Latin America’s October issue and felt like it just completely captured my mood. I’m also really into the sleek cat eye with a nude lip look these days. Check out the images below – hopefully you’ll be equally inspired by this super pretty shoot!
p.s. how pretty is the pink paillette dress?!

ART//Congrats to The Future Gallery’s Martin Kohout
Here at the gamine we love a good art competition…especially when our friends win! Major congrats to our friends at The Future Gallery and Martin Kohout (who we don’t know, but should) are in order. Kohout, who shows his work at The Future Gallery in Berlin, won the Guggenheim’s Youtube Play, a video art competition (yes, on youtube) judged by esteemed artists like Marilyn Minter and Takashi Murakami and Guggenheim super-curator Nancy Spector. Twenty-five winners (out of over 23,000 entries) were awarded on Thursday. Check out Kohout’s winning video above! It’s a video in a video in a video…
Spector told the Guardian,
‘”Video as an art form is nothing new, but to have that vast platform and the availability of video in so many inexpensive formats now has changed the way artists are working with it,” said Spector. “There is a form that is very specific, with artists using mashups and remakes and it is very reflexive, looking at the medium itself and using that language.” She used the example of Moonwalk by Czech artist and YouTube Play winner Martin Kohout, a hypnotic and endlessly repeating play bar.’
A million congratulations to Mike and Anne of The Future Gallery and of course to Mr. Kohout!
STYLE//Home Decor: Gurgle Pots
I think these koi shaped pitchers have been around for a while but it wasn’t until they were given a modern and colorful update by designer Matt Ellison that I became interested. Not only do they come in 12 super happy colors but they make this amazing namesake gurgle sound when you pour out of them (which you can preview on the website – and it’s almost as satisfying as making the sound in real life).
Check out Gurgle Pot by Matt Ellison – I think they would make a great gift!
ART//Abstract Expressionism at MoMA
We went to go see Abstract Expressionist New York at MoMA with our new volunteer group called Museum Hopping which we are leading through New York Cares. One Saturday a month we are taking students from a NYC magnet school for the arts to a different museum. Go to New York Cares and sign up for an orientation session and then join us for Museum Hopping!
Back to Abstract Expressionist New York…
We liked it! The 4th floor is filled with masterpieces from Rothko, Johns, Rauschenberg and de Kooning. We especially liked the room full of Rothkos, but the small section about Pop Art felt like an afterthought. We have to say we didn’t love the other floors, they fell a little flat in comparison to the showmanship upstairs. We are suckers for the heavy hitters (sorry, Jed). The exhibition is made up entirely of works from the MoMa collection, a recession special. But MoMA’s collection of AbEx works is so thorough, they really didn’t need to borrow a thing. Let us know what you thought of the show.
See what Roberta Smith thought here.
Or what AbEx expert Jed Perl criticized here.
STYLE//What We Want Right Now: Clog Boots
You’d have to be living under a rock not to know that clogs are back in style in a big way – and not just for Spring or Summer. I’ve seen all kinds of clog/boot concoctions on the streets these days but after asking around (yes, I occasionally ask random people on the street where they buy their footwear) I’ve decided that No. 6 Store is officially my favorite source for these bad boys.
They’re a tad pricey but after checking them out today in person I can tell you first hand, they’re worth it! I loved so many different options but in the end if I invest in a pair I’ll be torn between the short leather buckle boot in black or the same version with shearling lining – comfy cozy, and something to replace those nasty ugg boots!
Are you craving clogs like I am or do you think they’re just a passing trend?
STYLE//Home Decor: Lovely Lighting
I recently picked up the beautiful coffee table book Downtown Chic, from the team behind my fave show 9 By Design (check out their design site here) and I immediately fell in love with the floral light fixture featured on the cover.
I won’t be able to afford this pouf of amazingness from Moss anytime in the near future, but I’d be happy to settle for this equally charming, affordable version made of shells from Clayton Gray. Wouldn’t it be perfect for a beach home?
STYLE//Jordana Warmflash Dresses!!
So, readers, my excuse for poor blog performance last week was photo shoots, photo shoots, and more photo shoots! I was practically buried up to my ears in piles of jewelry and dresses – but the one I was most excited about and even more excited to share with you all was for my friend and upcoming dress designer Jordana Warmflash.
Jordana and I have been best friends since we were both little girls in elementary school and we each grew up with a serious penchant for fashion. Senior year of high school we dropped a class and put on the school’s first fashion show – something which later became a yearly tradition.
While I eventually veered off into the world off styling and jewelry design, Jordana stuck with the design track and is now launching her website (which I might add she built herself!). When she asked me to style her look book I couldn’t have been more honored. Her dresses are easy to wear silhouettes and most can be taken from day to night with just a few accessory switcheroos.
Jordana gave me the freedom to be as creative and girly as I wanted with this shoot and I love how the pics came out.
Enjoy our project below and be sure to check out Jordana’s new site, photographer Sophie Elgort, hair extraordinare Neil Gogoi, and makeup artist Jill McKay – all of whom are amazingly talented artists as well.
LIFE//Waris Opens a Tea Shop through October 17
Waris Ahluwalia, man about the town, jewelry designer, art enthusiast, and fashion icon has opened a pop-up tea shop in Chelsea. The shop will also have clothes and accessories from APC, Rodarte, book publisher Assouline and jewelry by House of Waris. The shop was designed by Christian Wassman and feature a pavillion area and garden. You can sip tea from the Himilayas and nibble food from such hip haunts as Bar Pitti and Cafe Cluny. The shop will be open through October 17. Check out some pictures from style.com below.
STYLE//Pretty Little Things: Jordan Askill Heart Ring
I’m not sure I remember where I first spotted this ring but it’s been on my mind for a while. I rarely ever change my rings and when I do it’s just to switch the one I’m wearing out for something equally dainty, girly, and simple. This ring is definitely calling my name. It’s available in multiple styles and metals but I’m a rose gold girl all the way. It’s available for purchase from Australian designer Jordan Askill here.
p.s. the prices on the site are in Australian dollars but don’t fear, that actually works to our advantage! Plus, with the price of gold skyrocketing these days this is ring is totally fairly priced. Now I just need to find someone else who feels that way to invest in it for me…
